SJM’s writing is just… it’s so good. Can we just, first, take a moment to appreciate that? Ok. Cool. Thanks.

The way she foreshadows seamlessly and then still somehow shocks me and throws my heart into a box of push-pins. She’s a lot but I’m here for it.

I must say I was getting a tad bit annoyed with C in this one. Like… GIRL… do YOU know that you’re the most notorious assassin in Adarlan? Because we do. Or we thought we did. So why are you out here being careless? Giiiiiiiirl.

He took a step toward her, but she held her ground. “Believe me, Celaena,” he snarled, his eyes flashing, “I know you can look after yourself. But I worry because I care. Gods help me, I know I shouldn’t, but I do. So I will always tell you to be careful, because I will always care what happens.

Anyway, so C is the King’s Assassin now and is proving her loyalty to the king by carrying out his tasks but she also has her own agenda. Which I can’t say too much about without spoiling everything. We get to meet some new faces that, I get the feeling, are going to become very important later. We learn some ancient history that has resurfaced and is playing an active role in C’s life. We get our hearts ripped out. Twice. Thrice? I lost count.

The plot is thickening. Things are becoming more complicated. Things are being revealed. Storylines are shifting and evolving. New characters are playing MAJOR roles in the story. This book gives us a MAJOR reveal… maybe even a couple. 🙂 It’s s hard to talk about SJM’s books without revealing anything. I’d love to talk about some of these new characters and how much I love them but I simply can’t without ruining the experience for someone who has yet to read this book, so I won’t. But, just know, I really REALLY want to.

It was hard to care, she realized as she started the trek back to the castle. Incredibly hard to care, when you didn’t have anyone left to care about.

I just really enjoy anything SJM writes I suppose. Her writing style, her plethora of characters, and her extensive and intriguing plot lines. She’s fantastic.

Is this review about her book or her? I don’t even know anymore.

I’m really glad I was pushed to read ACOTAR and eventually found my way to TOG. I am THOROUGHLY enjoying myself.

I feel like SJM is the equivalent of the MCU. There are so many characters and storylines and they all end up meshing in ways that just blow your mind and make your heart stop and break and piece itself back together and break again. I just can’t wait to keep going so I can read all of her books but at the same time, I don’t want them to end.

I can tell her books are going to be go-to re-reads for me in the future. If I ever get through my current TBR pile…

Celaena, Chaol, Dorian, The King… everyone in this book is written in a way where they have a vibe and give you a feeling only their character can give you and I love that about SJMs writing. Every scene with the King makes me uneasy and a little sick to my stomach and I LOVE THAT. That’s how these characters should be written. That’s how I should feel when I read a certain character with his attributes.

I’m just having a great time. I really am. Go read anything by SJM. 11/10 would recommend.

“I’ll come back,” she said quietly. “I’ll come back for you.” And he knew that there was more that she wasn’t saying, some bigger meaning behind those words.
But Dorian still believed her.
