WOW. WOW WOW WOW WOW.
I have been told time and time again by numerous people to read this series. After reading the ACOTAR series, it wasn’t exactly difficult for me to want to pick up something else by Maas. I think what was holding me back was the number of books I’d have to commit to should I choose to begin this journey.
At the time of writing this, I am a little way into the 3rd book and I have no regrets! NO RAGRETS I SAY.
So I did start with the short stories as I do like to do things in chronological order if I’m able and I do feel like that gave me a head start on our main character’s character building.
Which brings me to my first point. The main character. Now… at times, I admit, I had trouble believing that she was able to be bested after reading The Assassin’s Blade where she was a complete and total badass the entire time and took down her enemies with ease. However, this was just a small complaint and not something that I felt took away from the story at all.
I have seen people say that they couldn’t stomach Celaena because of how self-centered she is. But I think that’s part of it. It’s part of her story and it’s the one weakness she has as Adarlan’s most notorious assassin. This is the main reason my small issue above didn’t bother me. Because it would make sense that even someone with these exemplary skills would fall short because of something like an inflated ego. She doesn’t believe she can be bested and scoffs at the idea of ever losing a fight so it’s only natural for her to lose every once in a while.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this book a lot. I’m a sucker for books that have a “Hunger Games” type competition. I enjoyed the different personalities of all the characters and the way everyone interacted. It felt genuine. And in feeling genuine like it did, it made it believable enough to have more of an emotional impact. There were SO MANY characters in this book between our mains for the series and the contestants in the competition. There are a couple that I really hope get some significant characters building and I hope play a significant role in the future of the series. I just want to see where they end up. No matter how angry they make me in the current time of the story I’m in.
Let me just go ahead and let you know… there is a love triangle. It’s there. It’s not a HUGE deal but it’s there. Just throwing that out there as it seems a lot of people prefer to skip love triangles. HOWEVER! I wouldn’t say it takes away from the story at all and something is telling me that there’s a reason all of this is happening. I would encourage you to read it anyway. Even if you’re not into the LTs. It’s good. And so far, it’s worth it. I am really really enjoying this series so far.
On to book four! And I know, I know, I really need to write reviews for books 2 and 3. I’ll get there. 🙂
